02/09/2019: Financial Literacy Class held at Goodwill Industries of the Valleys

Dan Johnson, Retail Lending Manager at the Rocky Mount Branch met with Maurice Hicks, Goodwill Industries of the Valleys representative, and approximately 20 individuals who participate in programming at Goodwill on January 17, 2019.  Goodwill’s Discovery Services is a program to assist people with disabilities so they have the opportunity to achieve their greatest level of independence.

The purpose of the financial literacy class was to help the individuals in the program to understand banking products and review what they need to do as they seek to become more independent. Several items covered during the session included requirements for entering into a contract such as age in the state of Virginia and what may be required if you have a court appointed conservator, representative payee or guardian.  Dan reviewed bank requirements for opening both a checking and savings account as well as what they would need to obtain a loan at Carter Bank & Trust.  He discussed with the group all the different types of loans we have to offer and how best to prepare for a loan interview.

The individuals all seemed to enjoy the presentation and were receptive to all the information presented.
